Cahill: We need to build momentum
Defender Gary Cahill hopes that the 4-0 victory over Maccabi Tel-Aviv can be the catalyst in terms of turning around Chelsea’s season.
The Premier League form of Jose Mourinho’s men has been horrific, as they’ve only managed to amass 14 points from 13 games, which leaves them in 15th place in the table.
However, in Europe, Chelsea have fared better and currently sit joint-top of Group G with Porto, knowing that they will qualify for the knockout stages if they manage to avoid defeat at home to the Portuguese side in two week’s time.
Cahill, who scored one of the four goals in Israel, spoke to the official Chelsea website that the victory was significant for a number of reasons.
We need to build confidence, we need to build momentum, and we need to get a run of wins together, so it was important for a number of reasons. I was pleased not just with the result but the performance as well. We played some good football on a difficult pitch and I thought we dominated from start to finish.
Cahill also spoke about the form of Brazilian Willian, who has been one of few bright spots on an otherwise forgettable start to the season. The 27-year-old has become one of the most deadly set-piece specialists in Europe, and Cahill spoke about the hard work that he puts into his craft.
From the start of the season he has been fantastic. He’s taken it up to another level. When he gets a free-kick anywhere around that 18-yard box you get the feeling there is going to be a goal now. I said that to him after the goal. We see him in training practising them and it’s not luck, he works hard on them.
