This summer, Chelsea will be looking for a new first-team captain for the first time since 2004, following John Terry’s announcement that he is leaving the club.
Terry has captained the Blues since Jose Mourinho handed him the armband full-time in 2004, but will be leaving the club at the end of the 2016/17 season in the search of regular first-team football.
Since taking the captaincy, Terry has become Chelsea’s best ever and most successful captain, winning numerous trophies and accolades in the years the Englishman has spent as Chelsea captain. Whoever replaces him as the club’s captain has huge boots to fill.
When Terry does leave the club, Chelsea head coach Antonio Conte has the mammoth task of choosing a successor. Many players could be given the captaincy, but the Italian will have no easy task in picking his new captain.
We take a look at five possible candidates who could replace Terry as Chelsea captain.
