Chelsea will be in for a tough Champions League draw regardless of whether or not they top their group, according to head coach Antonio Conte.
As reported by the London Evening Standard, Conte told the club’s official website that he knows what is in store for his side, as the Blues prepare for their final game of the group stage against Atletico Madrid.
Roma face Qarabag in their final game of the group stage and a win there would take the Italians above Chelsea by a single point as things stand.
Due to other results in the remaining groups, Chelsea could come up against the likes of Real Madrid, or Conte’s former side Juventus, even if they do win their group, with both sides facing the prospect of finishing second in their respective groups.
Historically finishing top of your group allows for a slightly easier match in the next round as you can only draw against teams who finish second, but Conte knows that is not the case this season.
If you arrive first, you could then get teams like Real Madrid, Bayern Munich or Juventus. It doesn’t change a lot if you arrive first or second. The most important thing is to reach the next stage, but for our mission and our confidence, it would be right to win and arrive first.
