# Chelsea Confirm Amelia Deal

Chelsea have[announced](https://www.chelseafc.com/news/latest-news/2015/10/amelia-signing-completed.html?extcmp=SOCIA_TW_ENG_NEWS_OTHERNEWS) the signing of Marco Amelia on a short-term deal following recent speculation.

The club have dipped into the transfer market to provide back-up for Asmir Begovic, who is the only remaining senior goalkeeper at the club, following Thibaut Courtois’ injury.

Courtois is expected to be out until at least December or January and Chelsea are looking to be safe with only youth goalkeepers, Jamal Blackman and Mitchell Beeney available should the worse happen to Begovic.

Amelia does arrive with some pedigree. The Italian shot-stopper was part of the 2006 Italian World Cup squad which lifted the famous trophy after beating France in the final.

Now at the age of 34, Amelia’s career has taken a downwards spiral, as he has acted as a back up at AC Milan over recent years. After a four-year stint in Milan, he has endured unsuccessful spells in Serie B, the second Italian division, making Chelsea’s attraction to sign the goalkeeper, questionable.

The Blues were forced to sign a free-agent after [failing](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-3247934/Chelsea-target-Manchester-United-s-Victor-Valdes-amid-Asmir-Begovic-fitness-fears.html) to land any goalkeeper on an emergency loan.
