# Baba Rahman compared to Ricardo Carvalho

Jose Mourinho has compared summer signing, Abdul Baba Rahman to the former Chelsea defender Ricardo Carvalho.

Speaking on the club’s [official website](https://www.chelseafc.com/news/latest-news/2015/10/mourinho--characteristics-and-consequences.html?), Mourinho says that Baba Rahman’s struggles in the early stages of his Chelsea career remind him of Carvalho. The Portuguese defender was one of the best defenders to grace the Stamford Bridge pitch, but it was never always plain sailing for him.

Joining from Porto in 2004 for nearly [£20m](https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/c/chelsea/3928771.stm), the defender joined with high expectations. He struggled in his early months to adapt to the Premier League and the style of play in England.

However, after eventually settling in well to his new surroundings, Carvalho went on to spend six years at Chelsea and a very successful six years at that. Fans have urged Mourinho to play Baba Rahman, due to the decline in Branislav Ivanovic.

Mourinho insists Baba Rahman will get the chance when he is ready. The left back has struggled to feature since joining from Augsburg.

> I go back to one of the best defenders the Premier League has ever had, Ricardo Carvalho, e was in big trouble for three, four, five months. He said he couldn’t adapt to the change from the Portuguese League and the Champions League to the Premier League: the way attacking players were playing, the way he had to adapt and learn how to use his position and his body.

> He was a super player but it was hard for him for three or four months. It’s a problem of experience and being adapted to the Premier League. It’s depends on the characteristics of the player.

> Baba is really good with the ball, he’s very fast, but he’s learning how we play and how we defend. The fact he came to us in the last days of the market took from him the possibility to work in pre-season, but he’s a good player for sure and we trust him.
