# Sky Sports pundit backs Chelsea for top four

Sky Sports pundit, Paul Merson has backed out of form Chelsea to reach the coveted top four this season.

Speaking to [Sky Sports](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/15205/10063926/man-utd-and-liverpool-wont-finish-in-premier-league-top-four-paul-merson-predictshttp://www.skysports.com/football/news/15205/10063926/man-utd-and-liverpool-wont-finish-in-premier-league-top-four-paul-merson-predicts), Merson believes if Chelsea can rekindle some of the spirit they showed during their 1-0 defeat to Stoke last weekend, they will be able to pick up enough points to climb their way into the top four.

Merson said:

> If Chelsea play like they did against Stoke, they’ll win a lot of football matches. I know that sounds silly as they lost but their performance was so much better.

The Premier League champions are currently sitting 16th in the Premier League, with the club much closer to the relegation spots, rather than the Champions League spots.

Chelsea are only three points ahead of Bournemouth in 18th and 13 points off Louis Van Gaal’s Manchester United in 3rd place.

> Chelsea have a lot of points to make up but I can see them going on a run while United are capable of drawing too many games. There’s still a long time for Chelsea to make up that gap and, while it’s a hard, hard one to call, I fancy Chelsea to just edge it.

Since the 2002-2003 season, Chelsea have failed to finish outside of the top four, just once. The Blues finished 6th in the 2011-2012 season, and we all know what happened then.

Failing to secure Champions League football would not do Jose Mourinho any favours and could hinder potential transfer targets in the summer.
