# Redknapp: Chelsea’s season has been like a soap opera

Former Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder turned Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp says that Chelsea’s 2015/16 season has been like a soap opera.

The 1-0 home defeat to newly-promoted Bournemouth was the Blues’ eighth league defeat of the season and star striker Diego Costa was once again left out of the starting XI by Jose Mourinho.

Redknapp, [speaking on Sky’s Saturday Night Football](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/18932/10090873/chelsea-8216like-a-soap-opera8217), Redknapp says that the incident with Costa and Mourinho that lead to the Spaniard being benched was just one of numerous sagas that seem to have occurred at Chelsea this season.

> That’s been the problem with Chelsea this season, it’s been like a soap opera. Week in, week out there’s been problems. Problems with the captain, problems with Costa, but you feel this statement \[is one that\] he had to make. Quietly he will be very upset with him, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he unleashes him against Porto because he is a quality player.

Redknapp also discussed why the Blues have struggled so much this season, and he believes that it all comes down to a lack of confidence and self-belief, which is bizarre considering how they were the best team in the country by miles last year.

> It’s actually hard to put your finger on it now, we’ve seen so many problems with Chelsea. They looked so sharp last year, it looks to me like so many of their players are running in quicksand, that sharpness isn’t there. Is it confidence? They’ve lost eight games, they are 21 points worse off than at this time last season. It’s dramatic what has happened there.

When asked if Chelsea can turn things around, the former England international said that they’d have to do something really special to even have a chance of getting Champions League football.

> It sums up how crazy this league is, though, they are going to play Leicester next week, who are winning the league, and it should be the other way around. To get in the top four? It will take an incredible run of form.
