# Ex-Chelsea boss blames struggles on lack of summer transfers

Former Chelsea manager Gianluca Vialli believes that a lack of transfer activity in the summer is a major reason as to why the Blues have endured a poor 2015/16 season.

Pedro was the only player who came in who had a real chance of becoming a first-team regular, as Asmir Begovic, Falcao, Abdul Rahman and the other imports were brought in to add depth to the squad.

Vialli, who won the FA Cup, League Cup and the Cup Winners’ Cup during his spell as Chelsea manager, thinks that a major signing would have freshened things up after the Blues comfortably won the Premier League title last season.

He told [Sky Sports](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11668/10163854/chelsea-are-struggling-because-of-lack-of-summer-transfers-says-gianluca-vialli):

> In the summer, the lack of signings at Chelsea was important. Normally you create a spark and that did not happen, and I think some of the players were mentally tired.

Vialli also spoke about the likely exit of John Terry in the summer. Terry has not been offered a new deal by the club and has no plans to retire, so it looks like the unthinkable will happen as the Chelsea legend will retire wearing the shirt of another club.

> Captain, leader, legend is the banner you see at Stamford Bridge. I hoped he’d retire at the end of the season so he could stay on in another capacity. It’s a pity and as a guy that is still fond of Chelsea I’m hoping that he’ll be back in another position.
