# Chelsea target Kostas Manolas set to sign new deal at Roma

Roma defender and protracted Chelsea target Kostas Manolas looks set to sign a new contract at The Giallorossi, according to reports by [IL Tempo](https://www.iltempo.it/sport/calcio/2016/09/06/roma-e-manolas-piu-vicini-al-rinnovo-1.1570998).

Having signed in the summer of 2014, as a replacement for then Bayern Munich defender Mehdi Benatia, Manolas has since gone on to become the lynchpin of Roma’s side – hence prompting Chelsea’s interest.

Selling Manolas was not a tempting proposition for Roma – as they would have had to have given half of any fee to Olympiacos. Although that clause is no longer in effect Roma are still ready to negotiate with Manolas over a new deal that could see him triple his current salary.

Club officials from Roma have apparently met with Manolas’ agent Yannis Evangelopoulos and a deal worth around €4.5 million is now on the table.

Manolas was reported to have held talks with Chelsea over the summer, as Antonio Conte looked to shore up his back four for the upcoming season. But in the end, Conte adopted for Brazilian defender David Luiz – after a deal for Manolas, among many other targets, couldn’t be done.
