# Southgate should be permanent England boss says Cahill

Gary Cahill has backed Gareth Southgate to be the England manager on a permanent basis, and says the squad are enjoying working with him, according to [ESPN](https://www.espn.co.uk/football/southgategareth/story/2970922/chelseas-gary-cahill-backs-england-interim-boss-gareth-southgate).

Southgate was named as interim manager for England’s World Cup qualifiers against Malta and Slovenia, following Sam Allardyce’s dramatic departure.

The former Middlesbrough boss was due to take charge of England’s Under-21’s European qualifiers against Kazakhstan and Bosnia & Herzegovina when the news broke, giving him little time to implement any sort of style on the senior squad.

Despite his limited time with the players, however, Cahill believes Southgate has had a positive influence on the team and said this when asked whether he thought Southgate should be given the role on a permanent basis.

> I don’t see why not. That’s something we have no influence on, all I can say is we have enjoyed working with him, the sessions have been good. Time will tell but maybe that’s a big point for us against Slovenia.
>
> We started out to win the game but it’s difficult to do that here. I came here a couple of years ago and it’s a difficult place to come. If we weren’t going to win the game it was important to not lose it, so we’ll take a point. We are top of the group so it is not all doom and gloom.

Southgate oversaw a relatively comfortable, though, rather dull 2-0 victory over Malta at Wembley, before dropping captain Wayne Rooney for England’s 0-0 draw in Slovenia on Tuesday.

And Cahill, who won his 50th cap against Slovenia, believes the current interim manager has done a brilliant job to handle the tricky situation in the calm manner he has.

> I think he has handled things really well. It was difficult to come into this situation. We’ve played it down but it is tough I’m sure for him. For us players the job kind of stays the same. We have to listen to what he’s got to say, we take it on board and try to put it into action, but away from the pitch he has to deal with everything else that comes along with it so he’s handled it terrifically well.

Cahill has returned to club action following the international break and is preparing for Chelsea’s clash with Leicester on Saturday.

And the defender will be hoping to improve his club form in order to make Southgate’s next squad for England’s World Cup qualifier against Scotland, before a friendly against Spain four days later.
