# Chelsea facing competition from Liverpool in van Dijk chase

Chelsea are set to face serious competition in their chase for Southampton man Virgil van Dijk, with Liverpool sniffing around the defender as well.

According to a report this morning from the [London Evening Standard](https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/liverpool-emerge-as-serious-rivals-to-chelsea-for-virgil-van-dijk-but-southampton-could-hold-out-for-a3498096.html), the Reds are seriously considering making a summer move for the Dutchman and will be looking to rival the Blues in their pursuit of the centre-back.

Van Dijk has been sidelined since late January after a challenge from Jamie Vardy in Saints’ 3-0 win at St Mary’s left him with a serious foot injury, but the powerful ex-Celtic man is continuing his recovery and will be hoping to make a return before the end of the ongoing 2016/17 campaign.

The report claims that Saints will seek out a fee worth in the region of £50 million, which would be the joint-highest ever transfer fee for a defender in history, but one that would be affordable for Chelsea.

Van Dijk would almost certainly bolster the Blues’ back line and would provide a lot of quality.
