# Luiz decision only a precaution

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has confirmed that David Luiz was substituted as a precaution in their draw with Roma.

Luiz was taken off early in the second half against Roma – shaking his head as he walked off – sparking concerns over his fitness.

Conte has now said that it was only a precaution, allaying fears that Luiz could be the latest Chelsea star to suffer from injury.

N’Golo Kante and Danny Drinkwater are both currently missing through injury, and Alvaro Morata made his comeback against Roma after a month on the sidelines.

[Speaking to The Evening Standard,](https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/antonio-conte-confirms-david-luiz-withdrawn-as-a-precaution-amid-worries-over-chelsea-injuries-a3662406.html) Conte said this:

> David Luiz had a little problem in his calf and in this moment I can’t risk my players.

> We are playing always the same players.

Luiz had an excellent game before his knock, playing in a different role to usual. The Brazilian was deployed in a holding midfield role, as opposed to his central defensive duties.

He opened the scoring for Chelsea with a superb curling strike from distance, with the game finishing 3-3 – Eden Hazard scored Chelsea’s other two goals.
