# Chelsea staff confused by Rob Green signing

Members of Maurizio Sarri’s coaching team were reportedly left confused by the arrival of Rob Green, who joined the club on a free transfer this week.

[The Times reports](https://www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/sport/maurizio-sarri-had-no-say-over-chelseas-deal-to-sign-robert-green-jnt79qgpb) that Sarri’s back-room team had not earmarked the player as a transfer target and the Italian boss had no say in the matter.

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia, [who is in Italy this week for transfer talks](https://readchelsea.com/2018/07/27/morata-agrees-move-away-agent-of-chelsea-defensive-target-confirms-blues-interest-and-more-chelsea-news-round-up/), is said to have handled the transfer independently.

The report claims that while the move came as a surprise to Sarri and his team, it is not something he is necessarily unhappy about, with Green unlikely to ever feature in the first-team.

The Blues continued their trend of having three experienced first-team goalkeepers by snapping up the former England international on a one-year deal.

The departure of Eduardo, who joined Vitesse on a season-long loan, left Chelsea without a third-choice stopper.

The former Norwich and Queens Park Rangers goalkeeper does boost Chelsea’s homegrown quota, with the Blues keen to adhere to the Premier League rules.
