# Chelsea set to make David Luiz a controversial contract offer

Chelsea will reportedly go against their own contract policy and offer David Luiz a new deal at the club.

[According to reports in Spain, as cited on Sport Witness](https://sportwitness.co.uk/chelseas-contract-decision-player-will-certainly-create-controversy/), the Blues are set to offer the Brazilian defender a new contract that will be longer than a 12-month extension.

Chelsea are known to have a policy whereby they only offer players over the age of 30 a 12-month extension.

The policy has been in place for some time, with the club wary about the possibility of being hamstrung by a player’s high wages in the latter stages of their careers.

The report claims that Luiz would have left the club had he only have been offered a one-year extension.

Barcelona were said to be interested in the player on the basis that they could pick him up on the cheap, but that no longer appears to be the case.

Chelsea now look set to make what could be considered as a controversial decision and allow Luiz to go against their usual conditions, an opportunity many players have been denied of.

Luiz cemented his place in the hearts of Chelsea fans over the weekend with a stunning performance and match-winning goal against Manchester City.
