# Chelsea ahead of Spurs in race to land Thomas Lemar

Chelsea are leading rivals Tottenham in the race to sign Atletico Madrid winger Thomas Lemar.

That’s according to [The Telegraph](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2020/01/09/chelsea-tottenham-want-thomas-lemar-loan-face-competition-european/), who claim that the Blues are ahead of Spurs with an offer for the French international.

The 24-year-old, who[joined the La Liga heavyweights from Monaco](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-6006639/Thomas-Lemar-presented-Atletico-Madrid-player-completing-52m-Monaco-move.html) back in 2018 in a deal worth £52m, has struggled to make an impact at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium, with manager [Diego Simeone admitting he has failed to “live up to expectations”](https://www.marca.com/en/football/spanish-football/2020/01/03/5e0f3ec8e2704e0f9a8b45c5.html).

Recent [reports](https://readchelsea.com/2020/01/09/chelsea-offered-the-chance-to-sign-tottenham-target-lemar/) have suggested that Chelsea may have to pay just £5m for the player on loan.

The same [report](https://readchelsea.com/2020/01/09/chelsea-offered-the-chance-to-sign-tottenham-target-lemar/) claims that intermediaries working on the player’s future believe he would be open to a move to Stamford Bridge.

Reports from recent days appear to show that a possible move to Stamford Bridge is gathering pace, and actually, for the short-term, we feel as if it could be a shrewd move by Frank Lampard.

Even though Lemar has failed to score or provide an assist in 768 minutes of La Liga action this season, via [Whoscored.com](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/132962/Show/Thomas-Lemar), if he can get back to his form during his time with Monaco, it would be a great signing.

During the 2016/17 season, Lemar was involved in 25 goals, netting 14 times and providing 11 assists, via [Whoscored.com](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/132962/History/Thomas-Lemar).

Those sort of numbers are excellent for a wide man, and with the future of current wide man [Willian up in the air](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2019/nov/28/willian-chelsea-football-new-contract), a successful loan spell at Stamford Bridge could possibly turn into a permanent one.
