# Kai Havertz Explains Reasons Behind Chelsea Switch

Chelsea midfielder [Kai Havertz](https://readchelsea.com/2020/11/05/chelsea-fans-wishes-kai-havertz-covid-test/) has spoken to German publication [SportBild](https://sportbild.bild.de/) \[via [The Independent](https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/kai-havertz-chelsea-transfer-news-b1721037.html)\] about why he chose to sign for the Blues.

Havertz was one of the most sought-after European players this summer after his [2019/20 campaign with Bayer Leverkusen](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/kai-havertz/leistungsdaten/spieler/309400/plus/0?saison=2019). Real Madrid were [widely linked](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1309715/Chelsea-transfer-news-Real-Madrid-Kai-Havertz-Bayer-Leverkusen) with a move for the youngster, but it was [Chelsea who landed the prestigious talent](https://www.chelseafc.com/en/news/2020/09/04/chelsea-have-havertz-).

Currently [self-isolating following a positive Covid test](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11668/12123784/kai-havertz-chelsea-midfielder-tests-positive-for-coronavirus), the 21-year-old has wasted little time getting into his stride at Stamford Bridge, with [seven goal contributions](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/kai-havertz/leistungsdaten/spieler/309400/plus/0?saison=2019) in his first 10 appearances.

Two months into his Stamford Bridge career, Havertz has explained his decision: “To me, it was important to have a club with a vision. The club is on the move. We are a young team with a lot of great players. We think aggressively.”

Chelsea [last won the Premier League in 2016/17](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/premier-league/erfolge/pokalwettbewerb/GB1), but the German international can see that changing: “We want to build something here and attack. This motivates me. And then, a title with Chelsea is just worth more.”

The attack-minded midfielder [with an eye for a goal](https://www.coachesvoice.com/bundesliga-kai-havertz-liverpool-manchester-united/) also spoke about the considerations which helped him settle on a move to west London: “A transfer like this doesn’t happen overnight. I had to go through all options and things that are important to me. I was watching a lot of Premier League on TV anyhow and knew Chelsea really well.”

### READ CHELSEA VERDICT

It’s early days yet but it’s clear to see Havertz’s natural ability from his performances so far at Chelsea. Ever since his [hat-trick against Barnsley](https://www.chelseafc.com/en/matches/match-day/2020/2140642?pageTab=report), things have started to click for the German youngster.

It’s certainly nice to hear the current crop speaking with such ambition, and Frank Lampard is building a [young, hungry squad](https://www.premierleague.com/clubs/4/Chelsea/squad) complemented by the experience of Thiago Silva, Cesar Azpilicuetaeta et al.
