# Fabrizio Romano Links Chelsea With Move For Jose Gimenez

[Chelsea](https://readchelsea.com/2020/11/27/christian-falk-confirms-david-alaba-chelsea-talks/) are reportedly considering a move for Atletico Madrid defender [Jose Gimenez](https://readchelsea.com/2015/08/13/three-alternatives-to-john-stones/), according to reputable journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The Uruguayan was believed to be on the [Blues’ radar earlier this year](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-8642889/Atletico-Madrids-Jose-Gimenez-reveals-childhood-love-Chelsea-Frank-Lampard.html) prior to the signature of [Thiago Silva](https://readchelsea.com/2020/11/27/chelsea-considering-thiago-silva-contract-extension/).

Romano has sparked the rumours once again on his [Here We Go](https://www.patreon.com/herewegopodcast/posts) podcast by claiming Frank Lampard’s side remains interested in the 25-year-old’s services.

Valued at £63m by [Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jose-gimenez/marktwertverlauf/spieler/250845), Gimenez has only played [five times this season](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jose-gimenez/leistungsdaten/spieler/250845) for Diego Simeone’s team owing to injury and virus absences.

With 60 caps for Uruguay and [133 La Liga appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jose-gimenez/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/250845/plus/0?saison=&verein=&liga=&wettbewerb=ES1&pos=&trainer_id=) at just 25, Gimenez is already a vastly experienced operator who would likely make the switch to the Premier League with relative ease.

[Strong in the air](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/135914/Show/Jos%C3%A9-Gim%C3%A9nez) and with [vast Champions League experience](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jose-gimenez/detaillierteleistungsdaten/spieler/250845), Chelsea would be well advised to consider paying big bucks to recruit a defensive powerhouse like Gimenez.

Lampard [fixed his team’s defensive woes](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11668/12125317/thiago-silva-chelsea-boss-frank-lampard-praises-impact-of-experienced-defender) in the short term with the arrival of Silva, with the Blues conceding just [twice in the seven games he has played](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/thiago-silva/leistungsdaten/spieler/29241) after his Premier League debut against West Brom.

Despite the 36-year-old [potentially extending his stay](https://talksport.com/football/794058/thiago-silva-chelsea-contract/) beyond the end of the current season, at some point Lampard will need to source a long-term replacement for the Brazilian; and Gimenez could easily be that solution.
