# Chelsea target Dayot Upamecano to decide on future ‘soon’

[Chelsea](https://readchelsea.com/2020/11/30/chelsea-fans-praise-mateo-kovacic-performance-spurs/) target [Dayot Upamecano](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/01/26/chelsea-linked-with-signing-liverpoo-target-dayot-upamecano/) will decide on where his future lies ‘soon’, according to the RB Leipzig star’s agent as per reported by the [Daily Mail](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-9207065/Dayot-Upamecanos-agent-confirms-TWO-options-England-Premier-League.html).

The highly-rated Frenchman has a [release clause](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2021/jan/14/rb-leipzig-set-to-lose-upamecano-for-42m-in-summer-but-wont-sell-in-january) in the summer of just £38m and has a series of potential suitors, with the player’s representative  Volker Struth claiming there are [two ‘top’ English clubs](https://www.chelseafc.com/en/news/2021/01/27/media-watch--upamecano-keen-on-joining-tuchel-s-blues--oscar-kee) as well as Bayern Munich leading the way.

Upamecano, who was [described as](https://theathletic.co.uk/1768666/2020/04/27/bundesliga-team-of-the-year/) ‘man-mountain range’ by Raphael Honigstein, has been outstanding for the Bundesliga outfit this season and has [appeared in all but one](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/dayot-upamecano/leistungsdaten/spieler/344695) of his team’s league fixtures.

The 22-year-old helped RB Leipzig reach the [Champions League semi-finals](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/53759778) last season and has set about spearheading an attempt to dethrone Bayern Munich domestically.

A powerful centre-back who has already earned [international recognition](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/dayot-upamecano/nationalmannschaft/spieler/344695/verein_id/3377), Upamecano will likely be highly sought-after in the summer and new Chelsea manager Tomas Tuchel will surely be keen to land what would be a statement signing.

### READ CHELSEA VERDICT

Whilst Thiago Silva’s arrival has gone some way to [shoring up](https://www.chelseafc.com/en/news/2020/12/18/thiago-silva-determined-to-leave-his-mark-at-chelsea-and-win-mor) the previous defensive frailties, there remains a few question marks over the experienced Brazilian’s long-term partner.

Also, Silva is no spring chicken at 36, so signing a successor to the former PSG man could be high on Tuchel’s to-do list.

Upamecano ticks both boxes, and signing the Frenchman in the summer [should provide an excellent answer](https://www.bundesliga.com/en/news/Bundesliga/dayot-upamecano-rb-leipzig-world-s-best-young-defender-ousmane-dembele-473962.jsp) to Chelsea’s defensive problems, although there’s some fierce competition to beat for that scenario to become a reality.
