# Journalist backs Mason Mount to sign improved contract amid big Graham Potter claim

**Journalist Dean Jones is expecting Mason Mount to be handed a new Chelsea deal, with Graham Potter a “big admirer” of the 23-year-old.**

The [Evening Standard](https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/chelsea-fc-mount-new-contract-mendy-reject-b1023388.html) have reported that the Blues are hoping to tie down the player to fresh terms after recently securing the future of another academy product in Reece James on a [£250k-per-week](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-11180965/Reece-James-set-commit-Chelsea-five-year-deal.html) deal.

Mount is under contract until [2024](https://www.capology.com/player/mason-mount-36170/profile/) but the source suggests that ‘provisional discussions’ have already taken place with the 23-year-old ahead of a revised agreement.

Transfer insider Dean Jones has told [GIVEMESPORT](https://www.givemesport.com/88059028-chelsea-potter-already-a-big-admirer-of-88k-a-week-star-at-stamford-bridge) what he has heard surrounding Potter’s early impression of the midfielder, and he has backed the 2020/21 Chelsea [Player of the Year](https://www.chelseafc.com/en/news/article/mason-mount-wins-chelsea-player-of-the-year-award) to be rewarded by the club.

He said of the England international: “Graham Potter, I’m told, is a big admirer of his. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Mason Mount was set to get a new contract.”

**Worthy of a new deal**

Mount has undergone a slow start to the campaign, with no goal contributions in [his first six league appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/mason-mount/leistungsdaten/spieler/346483), but last season he scored [13 times](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/mason-mount/leistungsdaten/spieler/346483https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/mason-mount/leistungsdaten/spieler/346483/plus/0?saison=2021), with 11 of those goals coming in the top flight.

He also [ranked first](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/chelsea-fc/leistungsdaten/verein/631/reldata/%262021/plus/1) among his team-mates for assists as he recorded [16](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/mason-mount/leistungsdaten/spieler/346483) in all competitions, which may suggest that it’s only a matter of time before he gets off the mark for the current campaign.

CIES Football Observatory values the player who Joe Cole described as having ‘[that little bit of magic](https://tribuna.com/en/news/chelsea-2021-02-24-joe-cole-names-key-reason-why-footballers-love-mason-mount/)’ at a staggering [€90m (£77.9m)](https://football-observatory.com/-values-142395), and he could be about to further [enhance his reputation](https://www.google.ie/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwiJma7XyJT6AhWKTcAKHbmUDPMQFnoECBEQAQ&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.thechelseachronicle.com%2Fanalysis%2Fwhat-mason-mount-did-straight-after-he-scored-yesterday-will-make-chelsea-fans-love-him-even-more-tcc-view%2F&usg=AOvVaw2N4UvN_s4CfgOSe3px3tkI) among Chelsea supporters if, as Jones expects, he signs a long-term deal at Stamford Bridge.
