## Chelsea begin Champions League qualification campaign

Sonia Bompastor’s side must negotiate a two-legged qualifier after finishing third in the Women’s Super League last season.

Chelsea have already [set their sights on winning every available competition](https://readchelsea.com/2026/08/19/sonia-bompastor-makes-huge-chelsea-vow-before-e505k-european-showdown/), but their immediate challenge is securing a place in the Champions League league phase.

Progression would also guarantee Chelsea a starting payment worth [€505,000 before performance bonuses](https://readchelsea.com/2026/08/11/chelsea-women-handed-real-sociedad-showdown-with-e505k-at-stake/).

Bompastor will be without [Erin Cuthbert](https://readchelsea.com/tag/erin-cuthbert/), Mayra Ramirez and Manaka Matsukubo after [confirming all three players are unavailable](https://www.chelseafc.com/en/news/article/bompastor-confirms-injured-chelsea-trio-to-miss-real-sociedad-game).

Chelsea otherwise have an almost fully available squad after winning both pre-season matches, beating Auckland FC 7-0 before recording a 3-0 victory over the A-League Women All Stars.

Real Sociedad finished third in Liga F last season. The Spanish side will host the return leg at Estadio Zubieta on Wednesday 2 September, with that game kicking off at 6pm UK time.
