# Chelsea Premier League squad list: Alonso names 20 senior players

**Chelsea have submitted their 2026/27 Premier League squad with only 20 senior players named, leaving five of the maximum 25 places unused after a dramatic end to the transfer window.**

[Xabi Alonso](https://readchelsea.com/tag/xabi-alonso/) can still call upon a much larger first-team group because several younger players, including Estevao Willian, [Jorrel Hato](https://readchelsea.com/tag/jorrel-hato/), Marco Palestra and Geovany Quenda, qualify outside the senior list.

The [Premier League has now published Chelsea’s full registered squad](https://www.premierleague.com/en/news/4706139/see-all-the-202627-premier-league-squad-lists), bringing clarity after a deadline day dominated by major departures and failed midfield moves.

## Chelsea name only 20 senior players

Premier League clubs can name up to 25 senior players.

Chelsea have registered:

- Valentin Barco
- Jamie Gittens
- Moises Caicedo
- Pep Chavarria
- Emmanuel Emegha
- Wesley Fofana
- Malo Gusto
- Jordan Henderson
- Reece James
- Joao Pedro
- Maxence Lacroix
- Romeo Lavia
- Pedro Neto
- Emiliano Martinez
- Cole Palmer
- Morgan Rogers
- Levi Colwill
- Teddy Sharman-Lowe
- Gabriel Slonina
- Danny Welbeck

That leaves **five senior places unused**.

The picture is less restrictive than it initially appears because Chelsea have a large number of younger players who can be selected without occupying one of those places.

## Estevao and Hato sit outside senior list

The Premier League separately lists Chelsea’s Under-21 players.

That group includes **Estevao Willian, Jorrel Hato, Marco Palestra, [Mike Penders](https://readchelsea.com/2026/08/27/mike-penders-clean-sheet-complicates-chelseas-emi-martinez-plan/), Geovany Quenda and Josh Acheampong**.

They remain eligible for Premier League selection despite not appearing among Chelsea’s 20 senior names.

That helps explain why Alonso’s actual playing pool remains considerably larger than the senior list suggests.

It also demonstrates the registration value Chelsea receive from the number of young players in their squad.

## Enzo exit reshaped Chelsea squad

The final registration list reflects an extraordinary closing period of the transfer window.

Chelsea sanctioned [Enzo Fernandez’s £125m-plus move to Manchester City](https://readchelsea.com/2026/09/01/chelsea-enzo-fernandez-man-city-transfer-agreed/?utm_source=chatgpt.com) and then failed to secure the midfielder they expected to replace him.

[Lamine Camara](https://readchelsea.com/2026/09/01/chelsea-agree-e55m-lamine-camara-deal-after-dramatic-deadline-day-u-turn/)’s proposed £47m move collapsed after Monaco withdrew from a written agreement, while Chelsea also made a late attempt to sign Everton midfielder [James Garner](https://readeverton.com/james-garner-chelsea-65m-everton-transfer/).

Dario Essugo then [completed a season-long loan move to Strasbourg](https://readchelsea.com/2026/09/02/chelsea-sanction-another-midfield-exit-after-125m-enzo-sale/?utm_source=chatgpt.com), further reducing Alonso’s natural midfield options.

That makes the unused senior spaces particularly interesting.

Chelsea are not short of eligible players, but the club have deliberately entered the first half of the season without filling the full senior allocation.

## Chelsea still have plenty of homegrown flexibility

The Premier League’s official list marks several Chelsea players as homegrown, including Henderson, James, Joao Pedro, Lavia, Martinez, Palmer, Rogers, Colwill, Sharman-Lowe, Slonina and Welbeck.

That means Chelsea’s decision to submit a smaller senior squad is not simply the result of being unable to satisfy homegrown requirements.

Instead, it reflects the age profile of Alonso’s squad and the sheer number of first-team players who remain eligible through the Under-21 list.

Chelsea therefore have a registered senior squad of only 20 players, but Alonso’s practical Premier League options extend well beyond that figure.
