Chelsea 4-2 Werder Bremen: Player ratings

Chelsea finished their preparations for the new Premier League season with a confident 4-2 win over Werder Bremen. Despite what the scoreline may suggest Chelsea were dominant over their German rivals and will have felt hard done by to have conceded twice.

Chelsea came quickly out of the blocks at the Weserstadion – as they raced into a two-goal lead within 10 minutes. The first goal came from a corner, with Diego Costa and Oscar playing the ball neatly around the Bremen defence, before laying it off to the mercurial Eden Hazard who took a touch before driving the ball home. Just a couple of minutes later Costa slipped the ball through to Oscar, who tucked the ball past Bremen keeper, Wiedwald.

Chelsea continued to dominate, but it would be Bremen who’d strike next – as former Blues striker Claudio Pizzaro scored from the penalty spot to half the deficit, after Nemanja Matic gave away a spot kick. Chelsea’s two-goal lead was re-established just before half-time, with Hazard the provider this time, as he slipped Costa through on goal, with the Spaniard curling the ball into the far corner.

After half-time, the Blues continued to pepper the Bremen goal with shots, but once again it would be the Germans who’d capitalise – as Pizarro’s half-time replacement Lennart Thy had time and space to drive the ball beyond Thibaut Courtois.

A flurry of substitutions ensued, and it was to be Spanish substitute Pedro who wrapped up the win for Chelsea, as he controlled a Michy Batshuayi knockdown before picking his spot.
