Chelsea 5-1 Sunderland: Player ratings

Sunday was a day of celebration, as Chelsea finally lifted their fifth Premier League title after a comprehensive 5-1 victory over already relegated Sunderland at Stamford Bridge. Tears were also shed for the departures of influential captain, leader, legend John Terry and coach Steve Holland – who is joining up with Gareth Southgate in the England set up after the season come to an end.

As for the match, Chelsea fans were in buoyant mood following a collection of tributes to Terry leading up to kick-off, but they soon found themselves behind as Javier Manquillo blasted the ball beyond Thibaut Courtois. An equaliser was, however, inevitable due to both Chelsea’s incredible home form and Sunderland’s dreadful away form, and it was Willian who grabbed it when he struck the ball into the net via a Jordan Pickford deflection. Despite two early goals, the sides went into the break level.

In the second-half Eden Hazard and Pedro, both put Chelsea in the ascendancy, with a fine strike and an opportunistic header gifting Chelsea a much needed 3-1 lead. Man of the moment Michy Batshuayi then grabbed himself two goals in the final few minutes of play, having come on for the seemingly departed Diego Costa who waved goodbye to the Chelsea faithful.

Party time was then in order as the Chelsea squad collected their medals and proceeded to celebrate their season long triumph, with fans serenading individual players especially a tearful Terry.
