Chelsea suffered a damaging 3-0 defeat against Brentford as Xabi Alonso’s side endured a miserable west London derby at the Gtech Community Stadium.
The Blues reached half-time level but failed to build any sustained attacking momentum before Brentford took control after the break.
Jaidon Anthony opened the scoring shortly after the hour mark before Igor Thiago doubled the hosts’ advantage in the closing stages.
Brentford then added a third in stoppage time to complete a chastening night for Chelsea before the international break.
The result means Alonso’s side have now gone three Premier League matches without a victory after defeat at Arsenal and last weekend’s draw against Hull City.
Chelsea struggle to create against Brentford
Alonso made several significant changes to his starting XI.
Jordan Henderson was handed his Chelsea debut against his former club alongside Valentin Barco in midfield, while Danny Welbeck replaced the injured João Pedro in attack.
Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers operated behind Welbeck, but Chelsea struggled to turn possession into clear opportunities during a cagey first half.
Neither team found a breakthrough before the interval.
Brentford carried the greater threat from dead-ball situations, an area Alonso had highlighted before kick-off after praising Chelsea set-piece specialist Austin MacPhee.
The Blues had been warned about Brentford’s strength in that department, with the Bees entering the match having produced more set-piece shots than any other Premier League side.
That warning proved significant after the break.
Jaidon Anthony breaks Chelsea resistance
Brentford finally made their pressure count in the 61st minute.
A corner was worked into a dangerous area before Jannik Schuster directed the ball across goal, allowing Anthony to convert and give the hosts the lead.
Chelsea attempted to respond but continued to struggle for the clear chances that had characterised their attacking performances earlier in the season.
That lack of threat was particularly noticeable without João Pedro, who was left out following the injury that forced his withdrawal from Brazil duty.
Alonso turned to his bench as Chelsea chased an equaliser, with 16-year-old academy talent Mathis Nicoll-Jazuli among those introduced.
But Brentford remained the more dangerous side.
Igor Thiago punishes Chelsea before late third
The decisive second goal arrived in the 83rd minute.
Brentford broke quickly after Chelsea lost possession and Thiago eventually finished the move to leave Alonso’s side facing a two-goal deficit.
A late third then completed Chelsea’s heaviest defeat of the new Premier League campaign.
The manner of the result will be particularly frustrating for Alonso after he spent the build-up demanding greater balance between Chelsea’s attack and defence.
Chelsea had scored freely during the opening weeks of the season but failed to find the net at Brentford while once again giving their opponents opportunities at the other end.
It is the first time Chelsea have failed to score in the Premier League this season.
Alonso now has the international break to assess another difficult defensive performance before the Blues return to domestic action against Bournemouth in October.
