Chelsea vs. Liverpool – Two matches in one week

Chelsea and Liverpool have a storied rivalry, one which really came into prominence in the mid-2000’s.

The two clubs have met in numerous encounters since the days of Rafa Benitez and Jose Mourinho’s sides going at it in various competitions.

The next chapter in this red vs. blue rivalry will take place this week when the two sides met twice in the less than 72 hours.

Firstly, Maurizio Sarri’s side must travel north to Anfield to face Liverpool in the Carabao Cup, and they’ll be looking for a response after dropping two points in the league at the weekend as they drew 0-0 with West Ham.

Both sides are expected to make numerous changes to their starting XI’s for the game, but they’ll both be looking for a win that will not only put them into the next round of the cup but also give them a small psychological advantage going into Saturday’s match.

Chelsea drew at Anfield last season in the league, before defeating the Reds 1-0 at home thanks to a goal from Olivier Giroud, and they’ll be looking for a repeat of that performance.

A look at the Premier League betting odds shows that Liverpool will go into the game at Stamford Bridge as favourites as they remain the only team in the division who have gained maximum points from their opening six games.

Jurgen Klopp’s side recruited well in the summer and are hoping to make a serious push for the Premier League title, and they’ll be able to lay down a serious marker if they can win at Chelsea.

However, a win for the home side would see them leapfrog the Reds in the table and would be a huge signal of intent regarding their own league title aspirations.

Sarri himself has recently spoken, saying that he thinks Chelsea are still a year away from competing for the title with Liverpool and Manchester City, but a win at home over Liverpool would put his side in a great position to mount a serious title challenge.
