Crouch believes Chelsea should re-sign Diego Costa

Peter Crouch believes Chelsea are missing a Diego Costa type striker in their team – and he believes they should go all out to land their former player.

Costa re-signed for Atlético Madrid officially last January, having completed a medical and signed a contract the previous September, being kept in London due to not being registered in the Spanish capital.

The Brazil born Spain international left the Blues after three years at the club, with the 30-year old’s highly publicised rift with manager Antonio Conte the reason for his departure.

Since then, Chelsea have struggled to find a consistent goalscoring striker, with current ‘first-choice’ Álvaro Morata still misfiring and back-up forward Olivier Giroud out injured.

The Blues have been linked with the likes of Gonzalo Higuain in recent weeks, as Maurizio Sarri looks for the man to lead the line up front for the club.

However, Crouch believes the London club should look no further than their former player himself, even if it means breaking the bank to land him.

Writing in his column for MailOnline, Crouch said:

Chelsea have scored the fewest goals of the top six sides. A return of 38 from 21 matches isn’t enough to win you a title, no matter how good your defence is.

The one thing you need is someone to score you 30 goals and they do not have a player like Harry Kane, Mo Salah or Sergio Agüero.

Not so long ago, they did. Diego Costa would absolutely transform Chelsea’s fortunes and, if it was down to me, I’d break the bank to re-sign him.

You can talk about Gonzalo Higuain or Karim Benzema, but I think Costa would be the one to take Chelsea where they want to be.

There was something about the way Costa’s career finished at Stamford Bridge that doesn’t sit right. I know there were huge problems between him and Antonio Conte, but even so, it seemed like they didn’t put up any kind of fight to keep him.

Costa has only scored once in 11 appearances in La Liga this season.
