Key Battles: Chelsea vs Manchester United

This last 16 League Cup clash sees two giants of English football go head-to-head as Chelsea host Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea cruised through last time out in the League Cup, seeing off League Two side Grimsby Town 7-1, where six different names were on the scoresheet for Chelsea.

Manchester United, on the other hand, limped through in the third round of the competition, progressing on penalties after drawing 1-1 with League One side Rochdale at Old Trafford.

In this competition, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard will have very favourable memories of playing against Manchester United. Last season, his Derby County side, which featured Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori, knocked the Red Devils out of the competition on penalties, after drawing 2-2.

Also, these sides have met before very recently. Manchester United ran out 4-0 winners in the first week of the season, however despite this result, Chelsea are currently in a much more favourable position than their opponents.

United have failed to kick on since their 4-0 win, and their performances have been drab and uninspired. However, the chance to get some silverware may inspire Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side to put in a strong performance.

Lampard has galvanised his young players and the Blues look an absolute treat to watch every week. Currently on a seven game winning streak in all competitions, and sitting in fourth position in the league, Chelsea will come into this game full of confidence.
