Pep Chavarria signs for Chelsea after the Blues finally completed their long-running pursuit of the Rayo Vallecano left-back.
Chelsea confirmed on Wednesday morning that the 28-year-old has signed a contract until 2031 and has already reported to Cobham to begin work under Xabi Alonso.
The move brings an end to negotiations which stretched across much of the summer.
ReadChelsea reported last week that Chelsea were closing in on Chavarria after making a breakthrough with Rayo Vallecano. The Spaniard had remained Alonso’s preferred option despite the clubs initially being some distance apart on their valuations.
Chelsea have now officially announced Chavarria’s arrival from Rayo, confirming a five-year contract at Stamford Bridge.
The club have not disclosed a transfer fee, although Fabrizio Romano reported that Chelsea agreed a €19million fixed payment plus add-ons.
Pep Chavarria signs for Chelsea to strengthen Alonso’s left side
Chavarria gives Alonso another natural senior option at left-back following Marc Cucurella’s departure for Real Madrid earlier this summer.
Jorrel Hato can operate in the position and offers considerable long-term potential, but Chelsea wanted an experienced specialist who could contribute immediately.
Chavarria brings that profile after four seasons with Rayo. He made 125 appearances for the Spanish club following his arrival from Real Zaragoza in 2022 and featured in their run to last season’s Conference League final.
Chelsea have wasted little time integrating their latest arrival.
The club published pictures from Chavarria’s first day at Cobham, showing the defender completing his media duties and familiarising himself with his new surroundings.
Attention will now turn to how quickly Alonso involves him.
Chelsea face Real Sociedad in their final pre-season friendly on Saturday, giving Chavarria a possible first opportunity to pull on a Blues shirt before the Premier League campaign begins against Fulham.
For Alonso, however, the most important point is that a position Chelsea have spent weeks trying to strengthen has finally been addressed.
