In comments reported by the Mirror and carried by AOL, Tuchel said:
“I was fighting for this transfer and he could never prove the importance that he normally had.”
He also expressed hope that Sterling could recover from his difficult period and get his career back on track.
Chelsea signed Sterling in July 2022, with PA reporting a £47.5m fee. He arrived after winning four Premier League titles at City and agreed a five-year contract.
Sterling’s Chelsea spell ended in January
By the time Chelsea announced his Arsenal loan in August 2024, Sterling had scored 19 goals in 81 appearances for the Blues.
Chelsea subsequently confirmed his departure by mutual agreement on 28 January 2026, ending his spell at Stamford Bridge before that original contract expired.
Tuchel is preparing England for Saturday’s trip to Croatia, with Morgan Rogers available and Cole Palmer absent following his withdrawal from the squad.
