Chelsea’s sporting department is facing another change following news of Laurence Stewart’s impending departure, while the club continue to be linked with potential additions to their squad.
Alex Scott and Palmeiras teenager Eduardo Conceicao have both featured in Thursday’s transfer coverage, with Xabi Alonso also preparing his players for Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Bournemouth.
Here is our 7pm round-up of the latest Chelsea news for Thursday, 8 October.
Stewart departure brings changes behind the scenes
Laurence Stewart is set to leave Chelsea by mutual consent after almost four years at Stamford Bridge, with the club planning to redistribute his responsibilities rather than appoint a direct replacement.
His departure is understood to be amicable and will not take immediate effect. Stewart joined from Monaco in 2022, initially as technical director, before becoming co-sporting director alongside Paul Winstanley.
As detailed in our report on Stewart’s departure and Chelsea’s leadership reshuffle, Winstanley, Sam Jewell and Joe Shields are expected to take on expanded responsibilities across recruitment, player development and the wider BlueCo operation.
The changes follow discussions about the club’s sporting structure that reportedly began earlier this year. There is no confirmed suggestion that Stewart’s departure resulted from a disagreement with Alonso.
Scott interest continues as Bournemouth hold firm
Chelsea’s reported interest in Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott remains a talking point, despite the south coast club’s determination to retain the England international.
The Blues reportedly had a £64m offer rejected during the summer, with Matt Law of The Telegraph subsequently identifying Chelsea as leading contenders for the 23-year-old.
However, as examined in our latest report on Chelsea’s interest in Scott, Bournemouth are not expected to entertain a January sale.
Scott’s immediate concern is recovering from a thigh injury suffered while representing England. The midfielder could face several weeks on the sidelines, potentially complicating Bournemouth’s plans as well as any future discussions about his next move.
Chelsea make early move for Brazilian teenager
Chelsea have also reportedly made contact with Palmeiras over 16-year-old forward Eduardo Conceicao, who is attracting attention from several leading European clubs.
According to Mark Brus of CaughtOffside, Chelsea have held discussions with the Brazilian club as they explore the possibility of a future deal.
Our report on Chelsea’s interest in Eduardo Conceicao explains that a valuation as high as €100m has been suggested, although that figure is not a confirmed asking price or evidence of a formal bid.
Manchester City, Arsenal and Real Madrid are among the other clubs reportedly monitoring the teenager. Conceicao would be unable to complete a transfer to England until he turns 18, making any prospective move a longer-term consideration.
Bournemouth visit brings focus back to the pitch
Alonso’s attention will now turn to Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge.
The match kicks off at 3pm and will not be televised live in the United Kingdom because of the Saturday afternoon broadcasting blackout.
Our Chelsea v Bournemouth kick-off and how-to-watch guide provides the full details, including how to follow the match and the available overseas broadcast information.
Scott’s injury is expected to deprive Bournemouth of an important midfield option, although Chelsea will have their own fitness decisions to make as players return from international duty.
After Saturday’s fixture, Chelsea travel to Hill Dickinson Stadium to face Everton on 17 October. Alonso will be looking for greater consistency as the domestic programme resumes.
