Geovany Quenda responds to Chelsea playing-time concerns after just 27 league minutes under Xabi Alonso

Key Blues takeaways

  • Quenda: Two Premier League appearances, both from the bench.
  • Alonso: Winger accepts the manager’s selection decisions.
  • Chelsea: Bournemouth visit Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Geovany Quenda says he must keep working for his Chelsea opportunity after playing just 27 Premier League minutes under Xabi Alonso.

The 19-year-old addressed his limited involvement while away with Portugal Under-21s, acknowledging the competition he faces at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea’s official player profile records two league appearances this season, both as a substitute.

Quenda accepts Alonso’s Chelsea selection decisions

Speaking at Portugal’s training base in Oeiras on Sunday, Quenda said his focus remained on the work he could control.

In comments reported by Portuguese news agency Lusa, translated from Portuguese, he said:

“Those are the manager’s decisions. I just have to keep giving my best.”

Quenda also acknowledged the quality of his Chelsea team-mates as he attempts to secure more regular football.

The winger joined Chelsea’s early pre-season preparations under Alonso after two seasons in Sporting’s first team. His Chelsea contract runs until 2034.

Bournemouth offers Chelsea’s next selection opportunity

Quenda is with Portugal Under-21s for Tuesday’s meeting with Czechia, with qualification for next summer’s European Championship already secured.

Chelsea then resume their campaign with Bournemouth’s visit on Saturday 10 October.

For Quenda, the immediate target is straightforward: turn substitute appearances into a first Premier League start. That selection decision remains with Alonso.
