Chelsea’s £40million move for Honest Ahanor has taken another major step after Crystal Palace agreed a deal to take the highly-rated defender on loan for the 2026/27 season.
The Blues reached an agreement with Atalanta for Ahanor earlier in the window but always intended to place the 18-year-old elsewhere before bringing him into their first-team plans.
That destination has now been decided.
Fabrizio Romano reports Palace have reached a verbal agreement over the loan, with Ahanor’s medical booked for Monday before the unusual double move is completed.
Chelsea make Honest Ahanor pathway decision
ReadChelsea previously reported that Chelsea had reached a £40m agreement with Atalanta for Honest Ahanor.
At that stage, the major unresolved question concerned his immediate development pathway.
Romano had reported Chelsea wanted Ahanor to spend the current campaign gaining further experience before joining the Blues permanently in 2027.
Chelsea have now settled on another Premier League club.
Palace have agreed to take Ahanor for the season, giving the teenager the opportunity to adapt to English football without immediately having to compete for a place in Xabi Alonso’s crowded defensive group.
Football Italia reports the wider Chelsea package with Atalanta could ultimately reach €48m including bonuses and performance-related add-ons.
Crystal Palace agree Ahanor loan
The structure of the transaction is unusual.
Reports describe Chelsea as having secured their future deal for Ahanor while Palace will get the defender first for the remainder of this season.
Ben Jacobs reports Ahanor will then move to Chelsea in summer 2027, with the £40m pre-agreement already in place. Romano has similarly reported that the Palace loan has received the green light.
Ahanor’s medical is expected on Monday.
That means Chelsea are effectively investing heavily now in a player Alonso will not immediately have available.
But it also gives Ahanor something Chelsea cannot currently guarantee: regular Premier League opportunities.
Chelsea’s £40m gamble becomes clearer
Ahanor represents another significant investment in Chelsea’s long-term squad.
The Blues have already recruited extensively this summer, but the teenager is being treated differently from players expected to immediately challenge under Alonso.
Rather than keeping him around Stamford Bridge without guaranteed minutes, Chelsea have chosen a full season of Premier League development.
If everything proceeds as planned, Palace get Ahanor now.
Chelsea get him next summer.
For an investment worth around £40m, the Blues will be hoping their Premier League rivals return a player ready to immediately compete for Alonso.
