Chelsea are reportedly monitoring Feyenoord midfielder Gjivai Zechiël ahead of the January transfer window after his outstanding start to the season.
The 22-year-old has returned to Rotterdam following loan spells with Sparta Rotterdam and Utrecht and has quickly established himself as one of Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s most influential players.
Arsenal are also monitoring the midfielder as interest begins to build around his future.
Chelsea’s involvement comes only weeks after Xabi Alonso was left without the additional central midfielder he wanted at the end of the summer window.
Chelsea scouting Gjivai Zechiël
Chelsea scouts have watched Zechiël closely ahead of January, according to CaughtOffside’s report on the growing Premier League interest.
His numbers help explain that attention.
Zechiël has produced five goals and four assists across his opening seven Eredivisie appearances, while also creating 19 chances and completing 89 per cent of his passes.
Feyenoord already rejected a €17million offer including bonuses from Lille during the summer and are reportedly determined not to lose him cheaply.
Their negotiating position has since become even stronger after Zechiël signed a new contract keeping him at Feyenoord until 2029.
Any Chelsea move would therefore require a significant investment.
Chelsea midfield search continues after summer frustration
The interest is particularly notable given what happened during the final days of the summer window.
Chelsea attempted to add another midfielder following Enzo Fernández’s departure to Manchester City but ultimately saw moves for Lamine Camara and Manu Koné collapse, leaving Alonso with fewer established central options.
That failure was exposed when Chelsea were left without a direct Fernández replacement after two deadline-day setbacks.
Koné remains on the radar, although his subsequent form at Roma has reportedly pushed his valuation towards €100million.
Zechiël would represent a younger alternative with a different profile.
He combines ball progression with increasingly impressive attacking output and has already become central to Feyenoord’s midfield after returning from his loan spells.
There is no suggestion that Chelsea have submitted an offer or opened negotiations.
For now, their interest remains at the scouting stage, but Zechiël is another name worth tracking as the club begin assessing their midfield options before January.
