In recent weeks, the Chelsea back 4 has come in for some slack from the Chelsea faithful. Especially, English centre-back, Gary Cahill. For the Chelsea fans, Cahill has been the man who has been at fault for some of Chelsea’s most recent goals that they have leaked in. Spurs away and Liverpool away to name a couple. What they don’t like about the goals that have been conceded is the fact that they could have been stopped. Instead. It seems the opposition are targeting Cahill who keeps backing off and gives them space to get a shot away, goal. Apart from that, Ivanovic has also came in for some criticisim. Having Azpilicueta, a right-back by trade playing left-back and having Filipe Luis, a La Liga winning left-back on the bench just so Mourinho can play Ivanovic out on the right. Is it the right choice? Ivanovic seems to play high up the field and leaves alot of space behind him, he isn’t an out and out right back.
However, I went and popped the question to some of the Chelsea fans on Twitter – Their thoughts on the Zouma/Cahill debate. Who should be playing regularly and who should be the cover? I also asked them what they think on the Academy defender who is seeking his break into the first team, Christensen. Is there a possible future partnership of Zouma & Cahill? Here are their thoughts.
@TekkaBooSon – “My opinion is Cahill would be a decent back-up, but he’s never consistently been a top level defender. I’d much rather give Zouma a go, who has looked impressive, and have him make mistakes and learn than see Cahill make mistakes. Christensen I’ve never seen play”.
@TheChelseaWay – “Well, Cahill has been decent for us leading up until this season in which a drastic decline has shown in his game. I feel Mourinho should start giving Zouma more games, so he can be a regular from next season, however, he’s inexperienced and needs some grooming ahead of that time. In conclusion, we should stick with Cahill this season, and start with Zouma next season.” “On a possible Zouma and Christensen partnership – both are brilliant prospects, but there’s more chance of the former making it than a partnership between both happening.
@TypicallyRuud – “I feel Zouma should be first choice at the moment. Still a teenager but he’s showing so much maturity already. Also, he’s quite simply in better form than Gaz (Cahill), Hasn’t had a bad game when played. As for the Christensen/Zouma partnership. It’s very possible in the future. Christensen is extremely promising too. I just feel we need to play the Dane a lot more just so he can settle into the first team quicker. The pair need to be played often too. There’s no point in touting a potential partnership if they’re never gonna be paired up together. Play both at least in the cup games. Keep trying and testing how they fare together and then we can judge them as a partnership. But yeah, it’s very possible.”
@CaptainThorgan – “I want Zouma as the regular starter and Cahill to be sold. Better get rid off him before he screw things up for us. A possible Christensen/Zouma partnership would make me excited. Literally!”. The real question is, will Chelsea & Jose Mourinho use his younger options? Will he rely on young talent rather than use Cahill and Terry? We will find out.
