Chelsea are never far from the transfer rumours, nor is a new central defender ever far from Chelsea’s shopping list. John Terry looks set to continue for another year but is not getting any young, Gary Cahill’s form of late has also but his place in the side up for grabs. Mourinho is thought to be keen to line up a long term replacement to partner Kurt Zouma, when Terry does finally hang up his boots.
Since taking over at Chelsea, Raphael Varane has been constantly linked with a switch to Stamford Bridge for a reunion with his former Real Madrid boss. However, Real Madrid look unlikely to sell the Frenchman who is believed to have a £25 million release clause. The Blues could turn their attention to Athletico Madrid defender, Joao Miranda.
The thirty year old defender could be available for just £15 million with only eighteen month’s remaining on his contract. Under Diego Simeone, he has been a constant figure in a well drilled defence that has seen Athletico win La Liga and reach the Champions League final last season. Jose Mourinho is believed to be a big fan of the central defender.
Chelsea defender and former Athleti defender Filipe Luis is thought to be attempting to convince Miranda on a move to London. Any move would seem him become the fourth player to move to Stamford Bridge from the Spanish capital, including Thibaut Courtois.
