The Express are reporting that Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matić will be signing a new deal with the club in the coming days worth £4.8 million per year. According to the report, the new deal would be worth £93,000 per week, which is about £30,000 more than the Serbian is currently earning.
The deal is also said to keep Matić at Stamford Bridge through the 2020 season, which is one year longer than his current deal. If the report proves to be legitimate, it will be another piece of important player news for Chelsea on the heels of Eden Hazard’s recent contract extension and the proclamation by José Mourinho that John Terry will be a Blue for at least one more season.
Since rejoining the club last January from Benfica, Matić has become an all-important piece of Chelsea’s lineup. Matić provides elite level play in his holding midfielder role, effectively shielding Chelsea’s back line while also possessing vision and passing ability to contribute to the Blues’ attack. The Serb will return to action on Wednesday in Chelsea’s Champions League fixture with Paris Saint-Germain following a two-game ban that resulted from a dismissal for violent conduct against Burnely on Feb.21.
