The summer signing of Cesc Fabregas brought up several questions about Ramires and what his role would be this campaign. The Brazilian had a large impact on last season making 30 Premier League appearances plus Champions League and cup competition games. He was widely regarded as one of the most important players in the Blues campaign, with Mourinho often preferring him as the first defensive midfielder on the team sheet. However, this season has been a bit different for the Brazilian stalwart. Due to the great combination of Fabregas and Matic, Ramires has failed to see much of the field during the beginning of the season. Then, he was also kept out of the side due to a nagging injury. However, the Brazilian is fit now and he’s making everyone aware of his presence on the pitch.
Ramires has always been a player known for his sheer work ethic. He’s a traditional box-to-box midfielder, with pretty strong foot skills and good pace. He has even become quite a good passer of the ball. This season, he has been deployed in two main positions, one being as a central defensive midfielder and alternatively on the wing. While he exceeds expectations in both positions, he appears most comfortable deep in Chelsea’s midfield. Having not been utilized much this season, Ramires is doing a brilliant job deputizing arguably Chelsea’s most solid position on the field, central midfield.
Having Ramires back is so important for Jose Mourinho. He was even quoted in a recent press conference saying, “I have my Mourinho back.” Indeed he does, and the Brazilian continues to justify his manager’s praise. With players like Ramires, Chelsea boast one of the deepest squads in Europe. Important squad members like him are key to being successful in a long campaign. No wonder Mourinho is so elated to have his Brazilian stalwart back.
