Southampton (H) – Four Findings

Eden Hazard strolling towards PFA Player of the Year.

Hazard has been in excellent form this season. With 10 goals and 6 assists so far this season, not many in his position can compete. He’s been the most fouled player this season and also completed more take-ons than anyone else. With another strong performance against Southampton, he’s truly staking a strong claim for the main award come the end of May. Completing 11 take-ons and creating 4 chances once again he was Chelsea’s best player on the day. Many people are touting Hazard for the award and if he keeps playing at a high consistency level, not many would be surprised to see him scoop the award.

Chelsea struggling to score goals.

With only 13 goals in their last 10 games in all competitions, Chelsea aren’t scoring as frequent as one would like. Comparing this with the first 10 games of the season when Chelsea scored 25 goals, it’s not regular enough recently. In the last 10 games Chelsea have failed to score more than 2 goals in any game, yet compared to the first 10 games, they scored more than twice in 4 games. With Cesc Fabregas contributing 0 assists or goals in his last 10 games and Diego Costa scoring only once (today) in his past 8 games, Chelsea will need their big guns to start producing again if they are going to be lifting the Premier League title at the end of the season.

Decisions costing points again?

Another game against the Saints, another stonewall penalty appeal turned down. Only this time, there was one given against us as well. If we say their penalty was correct, then Jose Fonte’s challenge on Diego Costa should also have been, as it was almost identical to Nemanja Matic’s challenge on Sadio Mane. If this was correct and Branislav Ivanovic’s appeal was also given, then it could have ended 3-1 to Chelsea. Yet once again, decisions change games and in our case, two points again. Here’s to hoping the ability of refereeing will drastically improve for our remaining 10 games.

Positive result, not a good result.

Chelsea went into this game week with a 5 point lead at the top of the table and a game in hand. Chelsea come out of this game week with a 6 point lead and a game in hand still. In a better position than we were 2 days ago and a game less for the others to catch us, Mourinho’s men are creeping nearer towards to title. Although Man City may be in a poor run of form, this shouldn’t let us believe we can be also, as Arsenal have edged their way back into the race and are only 7 points behind us.
