One of the stories of the season took another twist last night when reports suggest that Chelsea target Raheem Sterling will turn down a contract extension at Liverpool. The England international has two years left on his contract but is expected to tell Brendan Rogers he wants to move away from Anfield after previously rejecting a contract believed to be worth around £100,000 a week.
As a result of this, Sterling and his agent have come under a lot of scrutiny from the media and former players alike. Former Chelsea defender Marcel Desailly has given his say on the transfer frenzy.
According to the Express, the Frenchman was quoted saying: “He must have his own reason. He feels that to grow he needs to go to a different club.” Desailly went on to add: “He feels that where he is, even if it is at big Liverpool, he’ll end up being like Gerrard after 10 years not winning the Premier League. It is his own feeling.”
Sterling who is also reportedly a target for both Manchester City and Arsenal, has spoken of his intent to win trophies. As more reports emerge, it is looking ever more likely that Sterling will seek pastures new.
