Claudio Ranieri has admitted that during his time as Chelsea manger, the Italian wanted now Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick at Stamford Bridge. However, he opted not to sign him – and decided to sign his then West Ham team-mate, Frank Lampard instead.
The Italian boss was in charge at Stamford Bridge between 2000-2004, and wanted to bring both ex-Hammers to West London.
When he was told that he would only be allowed to capture one of the pair, he opted for Lampard because of his ‘professionalism’ and to this day doesn’t regret making that decision. Ranieri has also said that 36-year-old Frank Lampard is the best footballer that he has worked with.
When reflecting on that, Lampard must be proud. 63-year-old Ranieri has worked with many top calibre players during his managerial career – and is now in charge of the Greece national team.
Talking to Sky Sports, Ranieri said: “Frank Lampard was my first signing at Chelsea and he was fantastic. Afterwards, experience made the difference. But right from the start he was unbelievable.”
Well Chelsea fans, what do you think. Did Ranieri make the right decision to sign Frank Lampard, rather than Michael Carrick? Let us know on Twitter: @TheStamfordShed.
