Chelsea on Alert After Khedira Reveals Madrid Departure

Defensive midfielder Sami Khedira has announced via Instagram that he will be leaving Real Madrid this summer. No club was able to sign him on a free transfer in January, and the German has ended up not renewing his contract with Los Blancos. This has put both Chelsea and Arsenal on high alert, along with a host of other European giants.

Back in the summer, Arsenal were in hot pursuit of Khedira going into the season, but nothing materialised. With the resurgence of Francis Coquelin in midfield, along with the likes of Ramsey and Wilshere, it’s hard to see where Khedira would fit in with the Gunners. He may definitely be good enough to break into the starting eleven, but that’d be at the expense of one of their current starting midfielders.

As for Chelsea, it’s hard to see Khedira getting much play time either. Mourinho enjoys using the Fabregas/Matic pivot with Oscar as a centre-attacking-midfielder. If Khedira gets thrusted into this system somewhere, it’ll also be at the expense of one of Chelsea’s current stars.

However, getting a player of Sami Khedira’s quality on a free transfer is nearly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. All of Europe’s biggest superpowers will surely be looking to coax the German into signing a contract with them. After the news was confirmed via Instagram, we know for a fact that a bidding war this summer will ensue.

matchday.
