Now the season has drawn to close, it has given us all a chance to reflect on what has been a magnificent season for Chelsea. There has been some high points and some low points, that’s for sure. On the flip side, there have definitely been some funny moments. Here are my top five funniest moments this season.
Arsene’s Shove
Arsenal visited Stamford Bridge hoping to improve on last season’s 6-0 drubbing. It was a fixture that was always going to be a controversial one, prior to the game in Mourinho’s first season at Chelsea he called Arsene Wenger a ‘specialist in failure’. A remark that only increased the intense rivalry between the pair. The game was also Cesc Fabregas’ first against Arsenal in the Premier League.
Chelsea won the game after a moment of magic from Eden Hazard and well taken goal from Diego Costa. However, during the first half after a rash tackle from Gary Cahill, Arsene Wenger has seem enough and decided to take matter into his own hands. Wenger stormed out of his technical area to confront Jose. After pushing Mourinho, the Chelsea manager soon told him where to go and the pair were spilt by fourth officials. Mourinho would later laugh and joke about Wenger’s shove during a press conference.
Drogba departing like a king
A moment like we have never seen before and are quite likely to never see again. After announcing his intentions to leave Chelsea at the end of the season, Didier Drogba captained the side in his final appearance. After Chelsea had gone a goal down to Sunderland, Drogba was substituted despite only playing around 20 minutes.
It was then the Chelsea players came together to lift Didier off the pitch like a king. It showed the true unity of the group and more importantly the affect he has had on the players despite not being a consist starter in the team. John Terry revealed after the game it was his plan and I am not sure we will ever see anything of a similar nature until Terry himself calls it a day.
Mikel’s back feel assist
During the early stages of the season, Chelsea featured in a game that really had it all. The Blues travelled to Goodison Park to face Everton. The game finished 6-3 and it really had it all, goals, cards, controversy and a skilful assist by John Obi Mikel.
One of the last players you would have expected to pull out a trick to set up a Premier League goal. After Muhamed Besic had misplaced the ball for Everton, Chelsea were in for another goal. Mikel’s clever back heel set up Diego Costa who slotted past Tim Howard. The skilful and calm finish from the Spaniard overshadowed the brilliant play from Mikel.
Fabregas’ sees red
One of the strangest red cards you are ever likely to see in the Premier League. Following a confrontation between Diego Costa and Gareth McCauley in the penalty, the players had surrounded the referee. With some players trying to get the game restarted, Fabregas went to collect the ball from the other side of the penalty box. Fabregas then executed a pin point pass towards the group of players, the ball struck Brunt on the back of the head which the referee Mike Jones deemed as violent conduct.
The decision was a controversial one and was questioned by both pundits and fans alike. Who like most, saw it in light hearted way. A clear accident where there was no real intent involved. Fabregas would later see his suspension lifted from 3 to just 1 game.
Mourinho soaks Camera
Jose Mourinho showed his passion in a number of ways during the Capital One Cup final. With the end of the game looming closer, it was clear to see that he knew his team had completed the task in hand. Be it celebrating with his staff or with his own fans, he was in a relaxed and celebratory mood.
There was a moment in the game were the camera man was left red faced, or wet faced if you will, after trying to catch a shot of Mourinho on the side-lines. Mourinho turned to face the camera and through the use of the water bottle he had in his hand, soaked the lens of the camera live on television. Followed up by a cheeky smirk in the camera, it was well and truly a Mourinho like thing to do.
