Jose Mourinho caught headlines with his Champions League triumph at FC Porto in the 2003-04 season. His team in Portugal had beat off the likes of Manchester United and AS Monaco, creating famous moments along the way. The exaggerated celebrations running down Old Trafford’s touchline, the muted celebrations as Deco and co lifted the trophy. Mourinho’s imminent departure had been well documented and London was his next stop.
11 years ago to the day, a young, eager and confident Jose Mourinho arrived in London, it was clear Mourinho was an exuberant character, which didn’t change in his famous first press conference. Mourinho walked in with a swagger about him and his intentions were clear.

It would turn out to be a historic day in Chelsea’s and Jose Mourinho’s history, with a statement that would follow Jose Mourinho to this day. Jose revealed it was an easy decision to sign for Chelsea, despite recently winning the Champions League.
“I found persons with the same mentality as I have. They love football, as I love. They want to win, like I want to win. We have top players and I am sorry I am a bit arrogant, we have a top manager.”
Mourinho made it clear to everyone, he did not lack confidence or ambition: “Please, don’t call me arrogant. Because what I am saying is true, I am European champion so I am not one of the bottle. I think I’m a special one.”
From that moment, Jose Mourinho was branded ‘the special one’, despite not actually saying those exact words. Mourinho lived up to expectations by winning the Premier League and the then Carling Cup in first season. Following that up by lifting the Community Shield, partnered with a successful defence of the Premier League in his second season. Even after leaving Chelsea, Mourinho went on to prove he is ‘The Special One’ with success at Inter Milan and Real Madrid.
