Roman Abramovich to Unveil Development Plans

Roman Abramovich to Unveil Development Plans

Roman Abramovich will today start a three day public consultation at Stamford Bridge. The Chelsea owner will discuss plans to redevelop Stamford Bridge, increasing its capacity to 60,000 from its current 42,000, according to Charles Sale of the Daily Mail.

Abramovich will hold talks with members of the public and local residents of the area to put forward his plans after coming to the decision to redevelop Stamford Bridge, rather than moving away from the stadium.

Should the plan go through, Chelsea will be away from the Stadium for 3 years whilst the work commences, with Twickenham or Wembley the most likely destinations. Abramovich has put together a team of architects and is taking inspiration from West Minster Abbey for the planning of the extension, according to the report.

The decision comes after Chelsea failed in attempts to secure land for a new stadium in areas such as Earls Court and Battersea Power station. The report states that most of the new seating will happen in the South Stand. The work will also see the removal of the two hotels outside of the stadium as Abramovich wants the ‘new’ Chelsea to be for football only.

The Russian billionaire is reportedly eager to spend another billion pounds on the club, before he hands the club over to his 21 year old son. The estimated cost of the work is in the region of £500m.
