According to several reports, Chelsea have just had a bid denied for Real Madrid midfielder, Isco. The initial offer was rumoured to be in the region of £20 million.
The realistic possibility of this transfer at any fee is definitely not high. However, if Chelsea were able to sign the Spaniard, they’d be much the better for it. Isco has a mature, play maker aspect to his game that would pay Chelsea dividends. While Oscar’s inconsistency has been noted, Isco represents a different option in the No. 10 role. He is much more of a distributor, in the sense that he is dynamic, but is always looking to find his team-mates. In fact he would be similar to his fellow countrymen, Juan Mata.
In a Chelsea jersey, Mata delighted fans with his ability to distribute and find the open man. He was typically the major force behind most of the goals that the Blues scored. The lad won Chelsea’s player of the year in both full seasons with the team.
However, when Mourinho deemed Mata surplus, electing to make Oscar, Chelsea’s attacking midfielder, Mata was sold, unable to break into a consistent spot in the team. Mata has been equally unsuccessful in nailing down a stable role at Manchester United. Some of that can’t be directly his fault due to the coaching carousel at the “Theatre of Dreams”. However, there is no doubting that Mata now struggles to find his identity amongst the teams he plays in.
This would not be the case for Isco. He comes with the credentials and the potential to be that creative force that Chelsea yearn for. Some of the creative responsibility must be taken off of Hazard and Fabregas. Isco would be the man to do so.
The Spaniard could come into this team and shake things up, which is exactly what Chelsea need. They require a new dynamic player to come into the team and give them more options. The Blues must have a plan outside of Oscar at the No.10 role. Isco is that plan.
However, the realistic nature of this deal isn’t high. While it would be an interesting transfer for the Blues, given Isco’s age, potential, and documented success, it’s difficult to see Rafa Benitez sanctioning a move, especially to West London. Either way, it’s good to reach high. There is no doubting Chelsea need a few big name stars this summer. Isco would be a good start for Mourinho and the Blues.
What do you think? Could Isco be a successful signing for Chelsea?
