After 45 minutes against PSG, Chelsea went in at half time 1-0 down against what was seemingly becoming an over brewing rivalry between the two sides.
Despite a quick start from Mourinho’s men, PSG were on top for the majority of the first half. This game was by no means a friendly pre-season clash. The tackles were fast and frantic from both sides on numerous occasions. With tempers threatening to boil over with a nasty swipe on Diego Costa from Serge Aurier and clear elbow on John Terry from Zlatan Ibrahimovic of all people.
Just moments later, the man who could have been off the field gave the French side the lead. Another poor defensive performance from the Premier League champions did not prove a great showing, Chelsea fans were clearly disappointed.
Things weren’t looking rosy for Chelsea. Clearly rustled by the first half performance of the players and the referee, Mourinho made drastic changes in the second half.
Victor Moses continued his rise back into the Chelsea squad with a well taken volley. Moses timed his run to perfection to meet a delicate chipped pass from none other than Cesc Fabregas. Moses impressed throughout, despite a quiet patch in the first half, the winger looked sharp and energetic.
Our South American stars entered the fray, injecting pace and power into the side. The inclusion of the likes of Ramires, Oscar and Willian changed the game for Chelsea.
As well the addition of Loic Remy and Radamel Falcao, an air of excitement and anticipation rose from the supporters as Chelsea began to take the momentum in the game.
It was clear to see Falcao was eager to impress, he did just that. His movement looked good, as well as his ability to bring other players into the game. The Colombian immediately looked at home in a Chelsea shirt, it is clear to see he will be a hit with the fans.
Let’s not forget, this was the player that nearly ever Chelsea fan wanted to sign just a few years back. Albeit a few years down the line, regardless of his injury, it is great to see the striker in Chelsea blue.
Another positive was the way Chelsea quickly took control of the game. Unfortunately we were unable to find the winning goal, so the game went to penalties.
The quality in the penalties is very pleasing to see. With Costa and Hazard having been substituted, we were handed the opportunity to see some different penalty takers. Despite Juan Cuadrado being the first to miss, Chelsea ran out 6-5 winners with Thibaut Courtois stealing the show. After making a couple of excellent saves, the Belgian shot stopper fired home an excellent finish into the top corner.
The victory brought a feel good factor into the camp, with the players clearly delighted with the victory.
With Manchester United beating Barcelona yesterday, we’re now presented with the opportunity for back to back victories as we prepare to face to Catalan side. Something that would be a massive confidence booster heading into the Community Shield against Arsenal.
Whilst the 1st half was most definitely under par, the 2nd half was a massive important from Chelsea. Progression is slowly being made and it has left fans feeling positive. Onwards and upwards!
