New Chelsea goalkeeper Asmir Begovic is determined to be successful at Chelsea. The former Stoke man insists he has not joined the Premier League champions for a bigger wage packet.
According to Simon Johnson of the Evening Standard, Begovic ignored interest from Tim Sherwood’s Aston Villa in order to pursue a move to the Bridge. Begovic joined from Stoke to fill the spot vacated by Petr Cech, who moved to Arsenal. Begovic is set to pocket a reported £75,000 a week at Chelsea, compared to the £45,000 he was on at Stoke.
The move was greeted by Chelsea fans whom welcomed his qualities. However opposing fans criticised the move, claiming it was the wrong move for the Bosnian who is widely expected to be number 2 with the Blues. Begovic has explained his move:
“Obviously everyone has their opinion, but for me it was more of a challenge to try something different. I think I was at that stage where I want to test myself against the best and that’s ultimately what I’ve come here to do.”
Begovic went on too add: “Even after the first week you can see the quality here and how they can improve you with the levels and demands here. There have been no guarantees. The challenge, the manager Jose Mourinho and players that are all here, was what attracted to me and that was a big part of my decision.”
“I’ll back myself, absolutely. I’ll be keeping my head down and working hard to see how I can help this team in the future.”
