Chelsea Football Club confirmed today that Jose Mourinho has penned a four-year extension to his contract as first team manager, keeping the Portuguese in the English capital until at least 2019.
The 52-year-old had this to say upon signing: “If the club is happy, I am happy. I think this is a normal thing for me to sign a new contract. It is important we have this continuity and I hope we can enjoy more success in the future – for the fans, the players and the club. I said when I returned here two years ago that I have a special feeling for this club and nothing changed. It is the club closest to my heart and I am very happy to know I will be staying here for a long time.”
Today’s news doesn’t come as much of a surprise. Jose made it clear from the moment that he re-joined Chelsea in the summer of 2013 that his intention for his second spell in west London was to stay long term.
Mourinho’s trophy-less first season back was a developmental one for the club, as he branded Chelsea a ‘little horse’ that still needed more growth before challenging for the title. Boy, was he right. The 2014/15 season brought a domestic double to SW6: the League Cup was won over Spurs at Wembley back in March, and more importantly the Premier League trophy finally made it’s return to London after five years in Manchester. Mourinho’s squad dominated and won the league with three matches to spare.
Many football fans will tell you that Jose Mourinho is what sets Chelsea apart from the other big clubs in the Premier League. Blues’ fans all over the world can rejoice today – Jose is officially at the helm of Chelsea Football Club for the foreseeable future.
