Brazilian international Marquinhos is unhappy at Paris St Germain after failing to secure a place in Laurent Blanc’s preferred back four and being denied the chance of a move to Chelsea according to le10sport.com.
The Blues reportedly made an offer of 42 million euros (just over £30m) which was turned down by the chairman and CEO of PSG Nasser Al-Khelaifi. With fellow Brazilians Thiago Silva and David Luiz occupying the regular centre-back roles Marquinhos has found himself on the sidelines. He can also play at right-back if needed, but Ivory Coast international Serge Aurier is the preferred choice.
Relatives of the 21-year-old have commented on his growing discomfort with the situation and sources close to the player feel a transfer away from the club is likely if nothing changes.
Whether this means that Chelsea would return with an improved bid in January or whether they continue to pursue their main target, Everton’s John Stones, remains to be seen. What is certain is that Jose Mourinho needs to strengthen the centre of his defence for the future given the team’s performances so far this season. Both Marquinhos and Stones would be ideal choices, the same age and have roughly the same amount of club and international experience.
Marquinhos (born Marcos Aoas Correa) started his career at Corinthians in Brazil in 2011, making just 14 first team appearances before a move to Roma in the summer of 2012 for 3m euros (£2.2m). He quickly established himself in the Roma back four and finished the season with 30 appearances. The following summer he moved to PSG for a much higher transfer fee of 31.m euros (£23m) which at the time was a world record for a teenager. In the past two seasons at the Parc des Princes he has made 64 appearances and scored 7 goals but with Thiago Silva and Luiz ahead of him in the pecking order he may be forced to look elsewhere for regular first team football.
