Chelsea travel to Newcastle in Saturday’s evening kick-off, and it’s a place that they have struggled in recent years. However, after a solid performance against Arsenal and a well-earned victory against Walsall mid-week, The Blues have been made favourites for this weekend’s clash.
Newcastle have lost their last four games, including their Capital One Cup tie against Sheffield Wednesday at St. James’ Park on Wednesday, leading to disappointment and anger amongst fans on Tyneside once again. Therefore, Saturday’s fixture is important, as it could either rejuvenate Steve McClaren’s season or put him under even more intense pressure.
Last season’s match ended 2-1 to the hosts and handed Chelsea their first defeat of the season in December. Therefore, The Blues will be hoping to pick up a rare win on the road against Newcastle, and if they do, it will almost certainly complete this season’s turnaround.

Team News:
Chelsea’s biggest loss will be star striker, Diego Costa. The Spaniard picked up a three-match ban for violent conduct after The FA ruled over the incident with Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny following Saturday’s match. Therefore, Loic Remy could start, after impressing with a goal against Walsall on Wednesday, and Falcao will likely start as a substitute. Mourinho confirmed in his press conference, he did not know yet who was going to start.
In defense, Azpilicueta should return after being rested midweek, and Kurt Zouma may return to partner Gary Cahill if Mourinho decides to drop Terry to the bench again. Hazard and Matic are also in line to return, after being rested for the Capital One Cup.
Steve McClaren is expected to make several changes to his teams line up, after a dismal display against Sheffield Wednesday during the week. Fabricio Coloccini should return to Newcastle’s defense, in an attempt to create a far more solid defense. Massadio Haidara will need to pass a late fitness test to play on Saturday, and should he fail, McClaren will have to play someone out of position, likely Rolando Aarons or Vurnon Anita, to fill the gap.
Stats:
Chelsea have not won at St James’ Park since December 2011, losing their last three matches against The Magpies.
Gary Cahill is in line to make his 100th league start for The Blues Saturday, whereas Hazard will make his 150th start in all competitions for Chelsea.
Writer’s Prediction:
Newcastle United 1-2 Chelsea.
